Book of the Week: The New H.N.I.C. by Todd Boyd (aka The Notorious Ph. D)

Quote of the Week:

Whatever's happening with hip hop is whatever's happening to us. If we smoked out; hip hop is gon' be smoked out. If we doin' alright; hip hop is gonna be doin' alright. People talk about hip hop like it's some kind of giant coming to visit the townspeople...
We are hip hop...so the next time you ask where hip hop is going; ask yourself "where am I going?"

Mos Def - Fear Not a Man

Songs of the Week:
Carry on Tradition - Nas (from Hip Hop is Dead)

Man, I feel what Mos is sayin in this quote. Basically sayin that hip hop us our generation as a unit. Im down for the whole movement as a people thing but here's the thing, should guidelines be drawn to say what is and isn't hip hop? Cuz most of the people claimin to be hip hop only tarnish the name and rep. As far as being for the movement, I koo, but when it comes to me puttin my rep as a christian and follower of the words and works of God, thats where me and hip hop disconnect from the hip. You digg?

Hmmm... you know - I got extensive commentary on this.

Hip-hop bespeaks a great deal of the state of blackness and whatever that means. My feelings are that there are some good parts of hip-hop, but there are overshadowing effects of nothingness that cloud the good. And like Todd Boyd said, "whatever's happening with hip hop is whatever's happening to us..."

Black people - as a whole - have lost their identity. Replacing identity is a whole bunch of STUFF. There is no doubt that we are here and we are here to stay, but what are we doing while we are here?? More importantly, what direction will we choose to take as a result of this nothingness: choose to be complacent, or make active steps in progressing?
